Do you know that as Africans/African-Americans we are twice at risk for first-time stroke than Caucasians?  What is more alarming is that in its report of national data, the American Heart Association found that blacks have higher death rates for stroke compared to whites and the prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans in the United States is the highest in the world.

On Selam Retta’s right hand is a scar due to surgery he underwent.  This 20-something year old New York Giants fan did not incur his injury on the football field imitating Michael Strahan but rather during his 9 to 5.  As a Software Engineer, Selam’s duties require him to utilize the mouse excessively and as a result he was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Breast Cancer in the African Community

In our culture we do not discuss breast cancer.  It is seen as something that is at a distance from us and we think that it doesn’t have a chance of affecting us.  This thinking is not only common within our heritage, but also in most African communities.  One of the unfortunate outcomes of this assumption is that when such a cancer is discovered, it is often too late to do anything about it.
